Shelley: Hi there.
Crusty old local Fisherman: (Drawls) Hey yuh.
Shelley:…
Local Fisherman:..
Shelley: I’m waiting for my husband. We’re going kayaking.
Local Fisherman: I can see that. Ever been up the Crystal before?
Shelley: No. This is our first time in this area. Yesterday we went to Honeymoon Island.
Local Fisherman: Is that a fact? Which way you thinking of heading?
Shelley: Hmmm. I’m thinking we should go against the wind and current to start, then float back down.
Local Fisherman: Seems sensible enough.
Shelley: We’re hoping to see manatees.
Local Fisherman: You just might if you paddle in far enough. About a couple of miles should do it.
Shelley: That’s awesome. What else will we come across?
Local Fisherman: (Takes his cap off, scratches his head) Well now, let’s see. Monkeys just over on that island there. And herons. And vultures. You know, the usual Florida birds.
Shelley: Wait. Did you say vultures?
Local Fisherman: Heh! Heh! They’re harmless enough. Unless you get too close.
Shelley: No worries there.
Local Fisherman: And of course there’s plenty of alligators in that river.
Shelley: I thought they’d be spooked by all the boat traffic.
Local Fisherman: No matter to them.
Shelley: Wow. Thanks for sharing that. We’ll paddle away from the shore.
Local Fisherman: Ma’am, gators swim in deep water too.
Shelley: But it’s not like they’re going to try and eat me. Right? Ha! Ha! Ha?
Local Fisherman: Not the little ones. But if one of those 8 footers has a look at you, he just might.
Shelley: Hang on a second. You’re just trying to scare me. That’s not very nice.
Local Fisherman: Dang, you got me. Heh! Heh! Heh! Nah. There’s not enough of you to eat. Why you can’t be more than 90 pounds soaking wet.
Shelley: Whew! Thank God.
Local Fisherman: Can’t say they won’t attack your kayak, though. They love kayaks. Especially pretty little orange and yellow ones.
And some pic’s from the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park …

Oh thats good. John sunbathes and you’re on look out. He hasn’t lost his English roots then.

Exactly. The only thing missing is a hankie, tied at the corners, on his head. North of Tampa is beautiful and not so crowded.

You saw a Manatee!!!!! I’m jealous. (My grandparents lived on Honeymoon Island; I have fond memories of those beaches!)

We did!!! Three! But am so disappointed with our camera. Will just have to go back today. As for Honeymoon Island, beautiful. We saw an armadillo and a turtle or a tortoise on our run there too. Your grandparents picked a beautiful spot.

Amazingly clear water and beautiful beach! Is it really called Honeymoon Beach? Did you seen an alligator? Well, at least you lived to tell the story. I was also wonderful if the kelp was noticeable?

Honeymoon Beach was just south of the Crystal River. Apparently a gazillionaire bought it and marketed it with contests for newlyweds. No alligators, which is OK. We did see them in the Wildlife preserve in NASA. They were all over the canals on the sides of the roads!! YIKES!!

Thanks. The ones with the flash make me crazy. Oh well, I might sneak some better ones on that we took at the Florida Sanctuary today. Shhhhhh they’re not the wild ones.

Even with the stupid flash on the colours were beautiful. We were lucky to see them as it has been quite warm. No gators though, which is OK. 🙂
Definitely a place to consider. We head two hours north tomorrow.

Ahhhh…my kind of vacation. Minus the paddling. 🙂

Awww. It was pretty amazing to see those guys in the wild, minus the alligators. The paddle was pretty easy too. 🙂 I think you should try a double kayak and let your husband think you are working hard!

We did. But every sound we heard, we would freeze in fear. Didn’t see one. Kind of mixed emotions cause that would have been a kick ass post! 🙂
